The Many Ways to Mindfulness
This morning, my weekly group had a lovely discussion on mindfulness and the many ways to attaining this state. How can we practice mindfulness in this day and age of technology where the focus appears to be on some piece of equipment (when you are with a group) rather than on the group itself?
Here are some of the methods we discussed:
1) Simply remember to breathe – deep breathes (or simply noticing how you are breathing or not) will bring you back into your physical self and pop you out of your mental self. Deep breathes provide a grounding sensation and give you that tiny space you need to simply refocus your energies. It’s that moment when you can change everything about your physiology – did you know that? Of course, you do….you’ve done it many times to calm your racing heart in times of anxiety (fear) or anger. It’s that moment when you say to yourself “There is a better way/feeling than what I’m experiencing right now!”
2) Practice mindfulness - mindfulness is not ingrained in us so we can use tools (from technology) to remind us to take moments throughout the day to simply notice what’s going on around us. One of the group has a gadget that is set to vibrate every 15 minutes – that’s her reminder to practice mindfulness. What does she do? I’m not sure – maybe she just quietly becomes aware of where she is, who she is with and what her thoughts are focused on at that moment. Goldie Hawn developed a course years ago on mindfulness for the classroom - Mindfulness in the Classroom.
Our mission is to help
young minds by nurturing
resilience, hope, and
optimism.
- Goldie Hawn, The Hawn Foundation
I would like to see this program moved into the homes and used there. Why? Because I’m curious about the health benefits that would come from this as stress is currently the #1 reason for most chronic diseases today. It’s simple – get a chime or a bell and ring it – everyone, in the family, simply listens to the sound (that’s mindfulness). You could use a chime that is the F -note to tune into the Heart energy to really calm the system and ring it at the table before you eat! I bet you’d notice yourself taking a big breathe as the note fades out and I, also, bet your dinner would taste better – think about the benefits – better digestion, better conversation, better manners. I think I’ll try it for myself…but I’d really be interested in knowing how it works for families – especially if the children ring the chime.
3) Movement lessons - for myself, I find that paying attention to how I move is also a way to practice mindfulness especially when I apply the Feldenkrais principles – which are slow the movement down so I can feel it, be aware of what else is being moved when I’m moving one part of me, noticing where I’m restricting free movement through my skeleton and am I breathing easily throughout it all. I truly feel that getting down on the floor in my training all those years ago started my journey to mindfulness….I had to pay attention to all parts of myself – body and mind (spirit, too) – while being encouraged to pay attention to what was going on all around me at the same time. Moving meditation is how I see and feel about Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons. You can feel this for yourself with this lesson from Lavinia Plonka’s book “What Are You Afraid Of?” named “Non-striving”
4) Meditation – can come in all forms – from sitting still and using the breath and mantras to walking, to dancing, to anything really. Again, it’s simply learning how to still the mind (read that ego) long enough to get the feeling of centeredness and a feeling of connectedness to All That Is. Lately, I’ve been hearing of how to become more focused by giving our ego-mind a job to do – kind of like sending someone out for groceries in order to have some peace and calm. For those of you who have trouble with meditating, this might work for you. Tell your chatter-box of an ego to go count numbers but do it waaaaay over there or tell it to go find your focus – bet you take a deep breath with that one!
These are just a few ways to mindfulness….I’m sure there are a lot more that can be discussed and that are used – go find yours, use it daily and feel the changes in yourself.

Energy Psychology: A New Way to Heal the Body and Mind
Ever wondered why tapping on the body works? If you have an inquiring mind, like me, articles like this make me very happy when I can get a deeper understanding of the processes involved in doing something as simple as tapping on meridian points. Read on and see where psychology and, indeed, conventional medicine are changing their idea about the mind, the body and health in general. I’m excited about where we are headed – no more sick care – only TRUE health care – health care in our own hands!
Nick Ortner: Breakthroughs in Energy Psychology: A New Way to Heal the Body and Mind.
The Science Behind Trapped Emotions
I love using and teaching others how to use Dr Bradley Nelson’s Emotion Code but have stumbled often around the explanation of how emotions get trapped in our bodies and tissues until I came across this article from the pH Miracle Living newsletter.
As Dr Young can explain it better than I, here is the information I liked the best from the article:
“Not only does the health of your body affect the emotions of your mind, but your thoughts and feelings can affect the health of your entire body. …… emotions are energy in motion. When you are (e)motional, you are energetic, either in a positive or negative way…….you can create two or three times more metabolic acids from your thoughts or your mental and emotional state than from ingesting highly acidic foods like dairy, animal protein, sugar and alcohol. (I thought this was interesting!)
….. And the way that thoughts become biology is as follows:
1) When you have a thought or say a word, it requires electrical or electron energy for the brain cell(s) to produce those actions.
2) As you carry on with that thought, you are burning or consuming energy.
3) When you are consuming energy in your thoughts, you are producing biological waste products called metabolic acids which are an energetic waste product that can be measured in pH, oxidative reduction potential (ORP), hertz and decibels.
4) Next, if those metabolic acids from your thoughts are not properly eliminated through the four channels of elimination (urination, perspiration, respiration or defecation), then the acids from your thoughts are moved out into your connective and fatty tissues because it must not be allowed to affect the delicate pH of the blood. The delicate balance of the blood must remain quite constant at 7.365 to remain healthy.
5) Next the excess and overload of acid are thrown out into the body tissues which can easily lead to all sorts of symptomologies: lupus, fibromyalgia, Lyme’s, arthritis, muscle pain, fatigue, tiredness, obesity, cancerous breasts, a cancerous prostate, a cancerous stomach and/or bowels, indigestion, acid reflux, heart burn, heart attacks, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, dementia, autism, and the list goes on and on.
The negative emotions of anger, resentment, and fear being the most powerful and acidifying of all emotions are all highly acidic to the blood and tissues and in many ways are paralyzing to all bodily functions. Over time, the fear of the unknown is probably the most powerful and acidic of them all. Fear is so devastating to the body that even if you’re on an alkaline diet, overcoming a serious health challenge is practically impossible.
On the other hand, positive (e)motions, such as love, peace, hope, faith, joy, forgiveness and charity can be alkalizing to the blood and tissues. These (e)motions require far less energy and can cause you to be relaxed in your mind and stop the playing of some acidic movie in your head.”
So, now you can see, at a biological level, how thoughts/emotions can become trapped in our tissues and lead to the dis-ease processes so prevalent in today’s world. All’s I can say is thank goodness for wonderful tools like the Emotion Code and muscle testing for being able to actually reverse this process of over-acidity when all else fails!
Well Organized Movement and Vitality by John Robson
Well Organized Movement and VitalityAs we get older, or after we have been injured, many of us experience stiffness, loss of strength, and muscular tension. It may be felt in the back, neck, joints or elsewhere. We may find it painful to move in certain ways or we may lose confidence in our ability to balance and avoid falls.
Although you cannot do anything about getting older you can do something about the effects of aging that you may have thought inevitable. You can improve the quality of your movement. Pain, poor balance and a lack of vitality are the result of poorly organized movement (which itself can be the result of many factors). Well organized movement can increase vitality, restore balance and eliminate pain by reducing stiffness and increasing coordination, power and strength. A well organized movement is one that requires the minimum amount of effort for the task at hand, involves the whole body, and is reversible. Minimum effort means that only the minimum energy needed is used – you then retain energy for other things. You have probably had times where you have struggled to perform an activity and perhaps grimaced, clenched your teeth or stiffened your body. These all interfere with the action and burn energy that could be better applied. A better action would be one where these unnecessary, parasitic components would be absent. The movement would then feel smoother, easier and effortless. In any action the whole body is involved whether you are conscious of it or not. Every muscle contributes to the quality of the movement either through acting (contracting) or by not acting (not contracting). For example, a rigid chest without movement between the ribs effectively acts as a splint that prevents the upper part of the spine from moving. That means that the neck and lower part of the spine are all that is available for bending or twisting and so experience more wear and tear as a result. Most people keep the muscles between the ribs permanently contracted – although they don’t realize it because they do it all the time – and then experience neck or lower back pain. It is also why so many older people struggle with transitions like moving from sitting to standing. The chest is an example of where muscles often remain constantly contracted but the same thing can be found throughout the body. When all of the muscles of the body are well organized for any given action, those that need to contract do contract and those that would inhibit the action by contracting do not contract. Another benefit of whole body participation is that the stronger muscles closer to the center of the body are more effectively recruited and effort in the smaller muscles of the extremities is reduced; thereby providing the opportunity for more refined and delicate movement. A reversible movement is one where direction can be changed or reversed at any time. The instant that a movement cannot be reversed is when the movement is no longer voluntary and you no longer control its destination. Reversibility means having real control of your movements and being able to do what you intend in a way that works well for you. When we move this way we experience ease, power and strength. Well organized movement originates in the brain. The brain controls movement and so, to improve movement, changes must occur in the brain. Under the right conditions, the brain is capable of forming 1.8 million new connections per second. The facilitation of these conditions is at the heart of the Anat Baniel Method where it is possible to find new, better ways to move that are more efficient, more pleasurable and more effective. When this type of learning happens and new patterns are being formed in the brain, the benefits go beyond the obvious physical ones. A brain that works better is also one that thinks better and one that experiences the vitality that was present when it belonged to a child who was learning all of the time. Loss of balance, stiffness, pain, and mental fogginess are not inevitable as we get older. Increased vitality, strength, flexibility and the ability to form new neural pathways are possible at any age. We can always improve the quality of our movements and the quality of our lives. Yikes! My Wild Reaction To Sugar and How I Healed It!
I’m currently listening to Nancy Desjardin, from healthlady.com , speak on sugar addiction. She’s describing how she began her journey on the road to health and nutrition and why nutrition is her greatest passion. From her recent survey, she found that most of the respondents wanted to cut back on sugar and lose weight. And, as a result, she’s been putting programs together that help people do just that. Here is one of them..….Stop Your Sugar Addiction.
Have I done this? No, truthfully, I haven’t. Will I? Yes, I will – in light of what happened to me this afternoon. My story begins last night when I was working on something that I had volunteered for and was getting frustrated at the amount of time it was taking and was getting a little cranky when, lo and behold, the thought came across my mind to have something sweet (comfort food for the emotions). Nothing was handy so I made some cookies – never even thought to use EFT to tap away the craving – and then proceeded to eat some, maybe too many, before I went to bed. I should have known better! I always get some sort of reaction to sugar and to too much gluten – this time it was stiff fingers and a stuffy nose in the morning. Nothing much more but, then, I had done an energy balance meditation the night before. That all changed at lunch-time!
Here’s something else I usually do when I’m at home – use muscle testing to feed my body what it needs nutritionally. Did I do that this time? Nope! Went with my head and not my guts and my guts paid the price plus my afternoon clients got to listen to the symphony of interesting painful noises being produced. Two cookies is all it took to set everything in motion! Here’s how my body reacted to these cookies (and possibly the ones from last night) and I bet lots of these reactions are familiar to you. First, I began to have mild heart palpitations and a racing pulse. Then, the gurgling began in the stomach, followed by some pain around the belly button which soon got worse. I got a little hyperactive, had some bloating, started getting a headache and began to get thirsty. Oh, and the gas pains kept getting worse – along with the noise! All in the space of 2 hours! Yikes! Haven’t had this kind of reaction before!
How did I deal with it? I started with drinking some water, taking some Nat Mur (tissue salt for water redistribution) and doing some Emotion Code for the emotional eating and, specifically, for the underlying reason for this sugar addiction and reaction. Lots of emotions – like being taken for granted, resentment, indecisiveness, lack of control and more – with an underlying addictive energy to sugar with the emotion of resentment being the root cause of addiction of any kind. All interesting to release but it didn’t stop the pain, the gurgling or the bloating and, now, I had clients to work with (thank goodness they know me well!). I kept massaging my ears and doing the Three Thumps to keep everything as calm as I could.
I finished my working day still in pain so decided to muscle test for what else I could use to help me get rid of the pain and discomfort ending up with Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine book in my hands opened to the page with the meridian wheel. Having used this book before, I knew to muscle test to find which meridians needed balancing and whether I needed to sedate them or strengthen them. This is actually what took all the pain away, thank goodness!
What have I learned from today and why did I share it with you? Well, I learned that it’s time, really time, to be rid of my sugar and food cravings once and for all – so, yes, I did buy Nancy Desjardins “Stop Your Sugar and Food Cravings” ebook (a mere $17) to get me motivated. I learned that I do have a load of ways to heal myself (or at least start the process) in a relatively short period of time and that most of these ways had nothing to do with allopathic medicine and everything to do with energy medicine. Wow!
Why share with you? Quite simply to show you, through all the links, that you, too, can do for yourself what I did to stop the pain and settle my intestines. I’m on a mission to empower all of you to become your own health provider – YOU, YOURSELF with the help of some resources to get you going. So, start exploring….where to start, you ask? My suggestion, and what I am doing, is with your diet…..if you experience any of the symptoms I listed above, then that is definitely where you NEED to begin.
So, let this day be the first day of the rest of your healthy life!!

Thoughts on Taking Pills
I love reading this woman’s newsletters and really resonate with this as I hear complaints over and over again about taking pills – even though these pills could actually save your life unlike the pharmaceuticals which only suppress your symptoms. Let Bette show you why you might want to change your thoughts around this.
Thoughts On Taking Pills by Bette Dowdell
As you might guess, I talk to lots of people about taking vitamins, minerals, what have you. And it stuns me when the response, frequently, comes down to an aversion to taking pills. As if taking or not taking pills affected nothing, except your pocketbook, and had no consequences–whether good or bad.
So today I want to talk about what vitamins, minerals, etc. did for me–which is why I jump up and down about them all the time.
A drunk driver hit my parent’s car a month before my first birthday. I flew into the door head first, mashing my pituitary gland. Nobody noticed. Through the years, doctor after doctor told my mother again and again and again and again (you get the idea) that I was fine. Which I wasn’t.
Puberty was an early-arriving train wreck. As part of the merriment, my knees swelled to the size of grapefruit if I tried to play baseball in the field behind the house. I learned a whole new definition of pain from my I-won’t-dance-don’t-ask-me knees.
Then the noise began. At a party, a guy decided I was pretty cute–until he heard the racket my knees made as I went downstairs–then he split. It’s hard to go down stairs without bending your knees, though.
Then my brain started cutting out. I’d be mid-sentence in teaching programming at IBM and suddenly forget why I was even in the room.
Most of my hair fell out, and what was left changed colors.
I slept and slept, even answering the phone in my sleep–without realizing it or waking up.
I was told I’d never have kids because I didn’t ovulate, for reasons unknown–at least to doctors, who still insisted I was fine.
After working with hormones for a few years, I got pregnant! WooHoo! But when it was time to come forth with child, I learned I didn’t produce the oxytocin that made birth happen.
I lost two babies to miscarriage and almost lost the two I actually got to raise.
Then the headaches. The fibrocystic. The fibroids. Raynaud’s. Digestion. Etc.
Stress–whether good or bad–made me cry. And since I’m not the crying type, that stressed me even more. Do you know how much power you lose by crying? Sigh.
Muscle and joint pain moved in to stay.
To sum up, life wasn’t even close to a walk in the park.
I began to wonder if once a train wreck meant always a train wreck.
I finally caught a clue that it was up to me, and started looking into vitamins, studying whatever I could find–which wasn’t a lot in pre-internet days.
But I slowly learned what vitamin did what, what minerals helped vitamins work and vice versa. What to look for and what to avoid.
A steady-as-you-go turnaround commenced. And grew.
Now, years later, I have quiet knees that actually bend, no muscle or joint pain, a brain I can depend on, energy that takes me straight through each day and, at long last, eyes that don’t leak in times of stress.
When I do visit a doctor, it’s for tests so I can track how things are going.
So, yes, I take a large handful of pills four times a day. And, no, taking pills is never the highlight of my day.
But how can I complain when vitamins and minerals, quite simply, saved my life?
It took me thirty years to figure it out–and I’m still learning. So when I’m jumping up and down about vitamins, trying to help others get healthy, please don’t tell me you don’t like to take pills.
Make it up if you have to, but say something that doesn’t sound so dumb.
Until next time then.
God is good,
Bette Dowdell

Could You Be VitB12 Deficient? (and not know it)
I’ve been looking for the under-lying causes of my mother’s recent health changes – and came across this lady’s information – via youtube….click here to listen to her interview.

My ears perked up when she started talking about diabetics and their symptoms as well as the elderly mind changes and when I came across another video where this elderly lady spoke of her hair loss being directly linked to Vit B12 deficiency, I knew I was on to something.
My mother is a diabetic with neuropathy but recently developed low iron levels, a feeling of extreme weakness, hair loss and increased memory lapses (more than I feel comfortable with) which we put down to her having the flu recently. She was put on folate to pick up her iron levels and is feeling better in that regard but her doctor wants her to have a colonoscopy as a first look at why her iron levels dropped.
Interestingly enough, low VitB12 will cause anemia, hair loss, memory loss, tingling of the hands and feet -all of which my mother has – and there are 2 easy tests that can determine if this is the case – a urine test checking for methylmalonic acid levels and blood test for homosysteine levels – much simpler than the other option.
Here is a link to the book’s web-site…..http://b12awareness.org/ It’s chock full of information on this over-looked Vitamin….the tests needed to diagnose the deficiency, a cobalamin deficiency criteria list and many stories about having this problem.
I really would like everyone to take a close look at this site – maybe even buy her book – and, if you have symptoms that the doctors can’t find a root cause for - ask, no, DEMAND to be tested for VitB12 deficiency. It could save you a lot of time and grief!
Testimonials for “Could It Be B12?”
“This is the definitive book on B12 deficiency, diagnosis and treatment for the lay reader and for the interested physician. As a result of reading this book, I now routinely test serum B12 and Urinary MMA on ALL patients, and have been surprised to find many symptomatic B12 deficient patients completely missed by the medical system.”
—Jeffrey Dach, M.D.
“Many puzzling medical cases could have been solved with careful screening for B12 deficiency. As a physician, I am ashamed to admit that we’ve overlooked B12 problems or just dismissed the possibility that something so simple could have such devastating consequences. This book should be a staple on the shelves of all medical libraries and offices, as it reminds us to start simple when trying to make a diagnosis.”
“This book contains critical information that could change the lives of many people. Anyone with any sort of unexplained health problems, from Alzheimer’s to leg pain to autism, must read this. I also wish every doctor would read it and become more aware of the prevalence of B12 deficiency. After reading it at the library, I bought a copy for myself and one for my doctor.”
